The Monticello Opera House was originally called the "Perkins Block" and was built in 1890. The first floor bays housed the Perkins mercantile interests, a general store and sewing machine shop, a hardware store and a farm implement supply store. There was a building behind that was used as a stable where horses, mules and wagons were sold. The second floor included a large foyer and an opera house with the largest stage in the region.
