THE MONTICELLO OPERA HOUSE - MONTICELLO, FLORIDA
The Monticello Opera House was originally called the "Perkins Block" and was built in 1890. The first floor bays housed the Perkins mercantile interests, a general store and sewing machine shop, a hardware store and a farm implement supply store. There was a building behind that was used as a stable where horses, mules and wagons were sold. The second floor included a large foyer and an opera house with the largest stage in the region.
The Monticello Opera Company was formed in March of 1972 to save the building from the wrecking ball due to the sad state the building was in. Regardless of the condition, it was worth saving due to the near perfect acoustics of the opera house area and the large stage.
The building continues to go through restoration and maintenance even today. The original architectural features have been either retained or reconstructed; they were able to make use of original molding and wainscoting in some areas. The seats in the balcony were able to be saved by the seats on the mail level of the theater had to be replaced.
Today the Monticello Opera House echoes with music, laughter and the sound of applause as people enjoy the wide range of performances presented here.
The Monticello Opera House is used for "community" theater where the actors are all volunteers. It attracts people from the entire region to come and watch, enjoy and remember what it was like to have good, clean fun with friends. They would love to have you join them for an evening of entertainment.
