The interactive narrative supplied by our Coast Guard Licensed Captains offers an insight into the fragile beauty of the St John’s River and the Hontoon Dead River.
Following in the wake of John Bartram, John James Audubon and Winslow Homer, your Blue Heron River Cruise will provide frequent stops for wildlife viewing and photography, discussions of river history and human environmental impact, and a full two-hour immersion in the magnificent splendor of the St. John’s River Valley.
Before the Europeans arrived in Florida the Native American groups, including the Timucua, called the river home for thousands of years. Some of the earliest pottery found in North America was dicovered on Tick Island which is in the river near DeLeon Springs. The finding of the pottery shows that there was a fairly complex socieity existing on the island about 6,000 years ago.
The river was the first great river in North America to be explored and settled by Europeans and you will be able to see the places that they founded as home on your tour. The Spanish seamen first mapped the St. Johns River in the early 1500′s and called the river Rio de Corrientes which means River of Currents.
The first outpost on the river was established in 1562 and called Fort Caroline. This was a full 50 years before the first English settlement in Jamesport, VA. The French called the river Riviere du Mai, River of May, because they arreived there on May 1st.

Our two hour tours leave daily at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. They add an additional tour at 3:30 pm from January 1 – April 30.
