Everglades National Park – Everglades, Florida

Try Canoeing in the Everglades National Park

The Everglades National Park is a watery wonder world of mangroves, shallow bays, lazy rivers, and isolated islands. It is the perfect setting in which to go canoeing, and there are many different and wonderful areas there, which you can explore.

It is possible to take canoeing daytrips into the Everglades, or to travel by canoe and camp at different sites for several days. The pure beauty and unique land and waterscapes of the park are things that you won’t forget.

While traveling through the Everglades, you have the opportunity to see many different forms of wildlife. The most popular are probably the alligators, but the area is home to a wide variety of creatures. Keep your eyes open for a variety of turtles, snakes, and even the American crocodile. You might also get to see bears, manatees, otters, or a Florida panther. Make sure you always have a camera handy, because you never know what you are going to see

The following are a few of the most popular areas to visit via canoe in the Everglades National Park.

 The Nine Mile Pond Loop

This loop is a day trip, which will take you through several different types of Everglade environment. You will visit mangroves, wetlands, islands, Nine Mile Pond, and more. This trail has numbered markers that make navigating far easier, especially for those who are relatively new to canoeing.

 Wilderness Waterway

This 99-mile trip will take about 9 days by canoe. You will find numbered markers to help guide you through the mangrove forests, around the bays and islands. You will also find plenty of camping sites along the way. Don’t forget that you will need a backcountry permit while camping.

 The Noble Hammock Loop

This loop makes for a nice, relaxing trip, and has markers for easy navigation like so many of the other trails in the Everglades. This hidden area was once the site of moonshiners, including Bill Nobles, for whom the loop was named.

No matter how much experience you have canoeing, camping, or backpacking, you should always make sure you are fully prepared for your trip. Make sure you have a map, compass, and plenty of fresh drinking water at the very least. If you plan to take an extended canoe trip that will require overnight camping, you will need to bring the appropriate gear.
